Interest in rehab facilities for sex addicts grows

Despite the fact that sex addiction is not widely recognized by the medical community as a diagnosable mental illness, rehab facilities are booming, as a growing number of individuals are seeking treatment for the problem.

Even though the diagnosis is not currently in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – the bellwether for all psychological conditions – experts say that many people struggle with sex addiction, which explains the increased interest in rehab facilities, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Additionally, the condition drew much attention after several high profile celebrities admitted to being sex addicts. In recent years, rehab facilities have had to put people on waiting lists for treatment, and some groups now estimate that the percentage of American sex addicts ranges from 3 to 5 percent, according to the news source.

Sex Addicts Anonymous says that many people who suffer from the condition are powerless over their behavior, similarly to those who are addicted to drugs. The group recommends that anyone who believes they struggle with sex addiction seek treatment from a rehab facility.
